WATCH FOR NEW SIGNS:  May, 2017 pollinator garden signs designed by Julie Bourman were installed at the Pollinator Park, Ramsey-Grove and Northland pollinator gardens.

PHASE I . NATIVE FLOWER GARDEN & BEE LAWN:  May, 2016: Pollinator Friendly volunteers, Stillwater Water Board and Gardenside Landscape completed Phase I of the Pollinator Park by first removing the turf. The bee lawn was seeded with Self Heal (Prunella vulgaris) 3.6 oz. (7.5 Tbs)/1000 sf, Creeping Thyme (Thymus serpyllum) 1 oz (2 Tbs)/1000 sf, White Dutch Clover (Trifolium repens) 3.2 oz. (7 Tbs)/1000 sf. Thanks to the generous support of the Saint Paul Garden Club, the flower garden is abound with pollinators: Wild Bergamot, Rough Blazingstar, Yellow Headed Coneflower, Joe-Pye Weed, Compass Plant, Oxe-eye, New England Aster, Fragrant Hyssop, Heartleaf Golden Alexander, Meadowrue, Butterfly Weed.  After the first snow fall Nov. 2016, we overseeded the clover bee lawn with a seed mix of creeping fescues and hard fescues for diversity and resilience in the lawn. May 6, 2017 additional clover and fescue was seeded. On May 20, 2017 Creeping thyme plants from Rose Floral will be added surrounding the flower garden.

PHASE II . THE SLOPE - Watch for little blue stem and milkweed on the slope thanks to a generous contribution from Ciranda and Minnesota Native Landscapes (MNL).  Only non toxic practices are used for this pollinator friendly project. July, 2016 existing vegetation was burned to prepare for seed and plants that provide ground water filtration through a deeper root system.  Our partners at MNL sprayed two white vinegar treatments to burn out the existing plants, avoiding beneficials like milkweed and blue stem. May 6, 2017 Minnesota Native Landscapes scalped the vegetation and seeded a pioneer mix with bluestem, rye, switchgrass, and indian grass. Later PFA volunteers joined in to plant 500 plant plugs including: Stiff goldenrod, sky blue aster, black-eyed susan, common milkweed, harebells, wild bergamot, golden alexander, compass plant, native thistle and more.

PHASE III . THE SHORT PRAIRIE - PFA is excited to work with our expert partner, Prairie Restorations, and get started this summer (June/July) on the prairie habitat and pollinator trail. The existing sod will be pulled up, and the native prairie flower seeds will be spread by hand.  We should see some lovely grasses and flowers in the Fall, but the prairie will thrive the second year.
